Perinatal Expert Dr. Emily Hamilton of PeriGen Presents New Research on “Rethinking the Labor Curve” in Dec. 2 Webinar
MEDIA ADVISORY
CRANBURY, N.J. – Nov. 23, 2015
WHAT:
“Slow progress” in labor is the underlying cause of cesarean births for roughly one in every six first-time mothers in labor. Traditional methods define slowness of labor as “too slow” based on a number of hours with no progress in late labor. This topic is the subject of heated debates and editorials among obstetrics clinicians who seek better methods to define safe limits of labor.
Recently published research by perinatal expert Emily Hamilton, M.D.C.M., PeriGen’s senior vice president of clinical research, on new methods to assess labor progression challenges conventional approaches that are based on a graphic representation of average dilation over time. The results reveal that these new methods have much greater discrimination for labor complications in comparison with the traditional methods.
During the free lunchtime webinar, Dr. Hamilton will present her findings from her research article titled Assessing First Stage Labor Progression and Its Relationship to Complications, published online at the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology (AJOG) website.
Dr. Hamilton and her PeriGen research team joined by Samuel Smith M.D., and Kathleen Collins, R.N., both of MedStar Washington Hospital Center’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Washington, D.C., have applied a method that uses multifactorial analysis of labor progression. With minimal bedside computing, the techniques can give clinicians an objective and more precise way of assessing labor progression.
