Allina Health CIO and Health Catalyst Win 2018 CHIME Collaboration Award

SALT LAKE CITY, November 1, 2018 – Health Catalyst, Inc., a leader in next-generation data, analytics, and decision support, and Allina Health, a 13-hospital, 90-clinic integrated delivery network based in Minneapolis, today received the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives Collaboration Award at the organization’s CHIME18 Fall CIO Forum. The award recognizes the successful long-term collaboration between CHIME Foundation firm Health Catalyst and CHIME member Allina Health, with special recognition for Allina CIO Jonathan Shoemaker.

“We are honored to receive this recognition from CHIME, which reflects our success in using organizational change and data to increase efficiency, reduce costs and improve outcomes,” said Shoemaker. “With the help of Health Catalyst, Allina Health has saved millions of dollars and improved our ability to deliver on our mission of enhancing the greater health of individuals, families and communities throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin.”

The collaboration between Allina Health and Health Catalyst is virtually unprecedented in healthcare. In 2015, the two organizations signed a $100 million agreement under which Allina Health outsourced its data warehousing, analytics and performance improvement technology, content and personnel to Health Catalyst to accelerate the health system’s transformation. The 60 Allina employees working in these areas became Health Catalyst team members working onsite at Allina. Simultaneously, Allina Health gained access to Health Catalyst’s full technology, content and deployment expertise to help the health system achieve faster improvements in outcomes at lower cost.

The technologies to which Allina has gained access include Health Catalyst’s Data Operating System (DOS™), a software engineering approach that combines the features of data warehousing, clinical data repositories, application development and health information exchanges in a single technology platform. Yet technology explains only part of what Allina has achieved since joining forces with Health Catalyst. Multidisciplinary improvement teams and a new project management infrastructure have also been essential to Allina’s transformation over the past decade. None of this would have been possible without the integrated data and the advanced analytics that have enabled Allina to carry out a series of clinical, operational and financial improvement projects.

“We are deeply gratified that CHIME has recognized Allina Health for its pioneering work in clinical transformation,” said Dan Burton, CEO of Health Catalyst. “Allina was our first customer and remains our most significant partner in the development and use of the Health Catalyst Data Operating System, our data and analytics platform. Allina has demonstrated what a truly determined and tech-savvy healthcare organization can do to move the needle on quality and cost.”

Overview of results
The combination of Allina’s analytics platform and its project management structure provided the foundation for a variety of clinical, operational and financial improvement projects. In one year, these projects saved a total of $125 million in the following areas:
  • Productivity improvements – $43 million
  • Clinical documentation – $14 million
  • Site specific initiatives – $25 million
  • Care integration – $10 million
  • Length of stay – $3 million
  • Reducing clinical variations – $30 million
The reduction in care variations resulted from a range of improvement projects, including lowering heart failure readmissions; lowering all preventable readmissions; improving stroke care; improving outcomes for spinal conditions; and improving cancer outcomes.
