Health Catalyst Congratulates Allina Health on Earning Healthcare Informatics Innovation Award

Minnesota health system recognized for development of a healthcare delivery innovation center to improve cardiovascular outcomes and realize $75 million in savings

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—Feb. 2, 2017Health Catalyst, a leader in healthcare data warehousing and analytics, today congratulated Allina Health on winning first place in the prestigious 2017  Innovator Awards, presented by Healthcare Informatics magazine, recognizing the nation’s most innovative healthcare organizations.

The annual Innovator Awards recognize leadership teams from hospitals, medical groups, integrated health systems, and other healthcare organizations that have effectively deployed information technology to improve clinical, administrative, financial, or organizational performance.

Allina Health, a 13-hospital, 61-clinic integrated delivery network (IDN) that includes three large cardiac care centers, earned its recognition by deciding to take on one of the most daunting tasks for any health system—the overwhelming financial and human burden of cardiovascular (CV) disease. To optimize CV care, Allina Health established the Minneapolis Heart Institute Center for Healthcare Delivery Innovation (MHI-HDI) in pursuit of triple aim goals—removing waste, underpayments, and inconsistent charting and coding. MHI-HDI’s priorities included implementing process improvements related to supply chain, overutilization, clinical practice and clinical documentation.

In recognizing Allina, the magazine’s judges cited the health system’s groundbreaking progress in the use of data and information technology to rework CV care processes to achieve significant clinical improvements and $75 million in cumulative cost savings. The savings reflect annual improvement between $2 and $12 million over a four-year period. Specific results from the initiative include:
  • Reduction in over-utilization:
    • A 62 percent reduction in troponins ordered over third order after 24 hours
    • A 96 percent reduction in creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) orders
    • An annual reduction of 886 units of blood given a to CV surgery patients
    • A 400-day reduction in length of stay (LOS) for heart failure (HF) patients.
  • Reduction in clinical variation and increased use of best practices:
    • A 41 percent increase in use of a standardized Atrial fibrillation protocol
    • 511 more high-risk percutaneous cardiac intervention (PCI) patients received closure devices to prevent bleeding risks
    • 481 additional patients received heart failure (HF) care coordination
·        Consolidated CV supply spend across the health system to obtain more advantageous volume pricing with supply chain vendors
·        Improvements in capturing patient acuity to enable more thorough coding and billing

“Cardiovascular disease accounts for nearly one out of every three deaths in the United States, and it comes with significant costs,” said Dan Burton, CEO of Health Catalyst. “The dramatic results from Allina Health’s initiative demonstrates the power of leveraging data and analytic resources to optimize cardiovascular care in terms of improving care quality, access to care, and removing unnecessary waste and underpayment.”

The MHI-HDI Center leveraged the existing infrastructure of Allina Health’s enterprise data warehouse (EDW) and cardiology participation in national registries to uncover data insights that would identify key areas for clinical improvement. Allina Health discovered opportunities related to: HF; acute myocardial infarction (AMI); lab test utilization; community health trends; LOS and use of intensive care unit (ICU) beds; PCI and bleeding complications; blood utilization; and atrial fibrillation (A-fib) treatment.

Allina Health has subsequently launched 42 clinical transformation programs with plans to continue the expansion.
